The heat that keeps breaking its own records

Start with the heat, because it is impossible to ignore. Forecasters give 2026 roughly a 69 percent chance of becoming the warmest year ever measured, and the trend behind that number is even more striking than the number itself. The ten warmest Julys on record have all landed since 2016, and the last four years, from 2023 to 2026, now hold the top four places. This year North America, Africa and Asia all lived through their warmest July on record, while Western Europe endured its hottest June and July ever, with some countries hit by a fourth heatwave since May.

A continent on fire

That heat did not stay on the charts, it turned into flames. According to a European Union report published on 6 August, record summer temperatures helped drive one of Europe's worst wildfire seasons in memory, burning more than 1.23 million acres and forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, mostly across Spain, France and Italy. Monitoring data suggests France is on course for one of its most extreme fire years in more than two decades. These are not distant statistics, they are villages evacuated and landscapes lost in a single summer.

But this is only half the story

If the paragraphs above were the whole picture, there would be little reason for hope. They are not. While the atmosphere was breaking heat records, the world's power grids were quietly breaking records of their own, and this time in the right direction. Renewables reached 33.8 percent of the world's power, or 10,730 terawatt hours, edging past coal at 33.0 percent, or 10,476 terawatt hours. By the end of 2026, clean sources are expected to supply around 36 percent of global electricity against roughly 32 percent from coal, the lowest share in a hundred years for the fuel that powered the industrial age. A century of coal dominance did not end with a bang, it ended with a line on a chart finally crossing.

Solar, the cheapest electricity in history

Driving that shift is solar power, which the International Energy Agency now calls the cheapest source of electricity in history, already undercutting coal and gas in most major economies. The scale of its growth is hard to overstate. The rise in solar generation in a single recent year was the largest amount of electricity ever added by any source outside a post crisis rebound. In the United States, solar overtook coal for the first full month on record in May 2026, supplying a record 12.8 percent of the country's electricity against coal's 12.2 percent, and reaching an all time high of 45.5 terawatt hours.

Two curves, one decade

So the real climate story of 2026 is a race between two accelerating curves. One is the rise in heat, fire and disruption. The other is the rise of clean and increasingly cheap power, with wind and solar together climbing from just 1 percent of global electricity in 2005 to nearly 20 percent this year. The uncomfortable truth is that both are speeding up at once. The hopeful truth is that, for the first time, the second curve is starting to bend the first, and the decade ahead will decide which one wins.
